Using a multicenter, randomized, and placebo-controlled design, we carried out a clinical trial. To qualify, the pregnancies had to exhibit preterm prelabor rupture of membranes, a gestational age within the 240 to 329 week range, be singleton, have received an initial course of antenatal corticosteroids at least seven days before randomization, and be managed expectantly. Randomized gestational-age cohorts of consenting patients were assigned to either a group receiving a booster dose of antenatal corticosteroids (12 milligrams of betamethasone every 24 hours for two days) or a saline placebo.
