Transgenic tomato lines with high expression levels can be potent

Transgenic tomato lines with high expression levels can be potentially used as producers of thaumatin for the food and pharmaceutical industries.”
“In an attempt to accumulate lycopene in the bacterium APR-246 Dietzia natronolimnaea HS-1

cultured in beet molasses, the influence of lycopene cyclase inhibitors on carotenogenesis (within the range 0-60 ppm) were evaluated. All inhibitors blocked the biosynthesis of canthaxanthin and resulted in accumulation of lycopene as the predominant carotenoid. As the final step of a study aiming at the optimization of culture conditions, a central composite design to a fed-batch process was applied to optimize the concentrations of lycopene cyclase inhibitors (within the range 0-50 ppm) in order to achieve high level accumulation of lycopene from D. natronolimnaea HS-1 cultured in beet molasses. On the basis of this approach, the optimum concentrations of lycopene cyclase inhibitors required to achieve the highest level of lycopene accumulation (8.26 +/- 0.17 mg/L) were determined as follows: imidazole, 24.74 ppm; nicotinic acid, 28 ppm; piperidine, 24.05 ppm; pyridine, 27.6 ppm; and triethylamine, 23.22 ppm.”
“A Curcuma longa L. lectin was purified by aqueous extraction, 80% ammonium sulfate precipitation and ConA Sepharose affinity chromatography. Its specific

activity was of 64,566 HU/mg protein for a yield of 41.2% total protein. The molecular weight is of 17.3 kDa. It has hemagglutinating activity against human blood group B, rabbit, mouse, rat, guinea VX-809 mouse Akt inhibitor pig, geese, and sheep erythrocytes. The optimum pH is between 6-7, and stable up to 40 degrees C. Activity was stimulated by Ca(2+) and Mn(2+). The internal sequence indicated similarity with legume lectin family. Moreover, at concentration of 47 and 94 mg/0.3 cm(2) disc showed antifungal activity against Exserohilum turicicum, Fusarium oxysporum, and Colectrotrichum cassiicola. The minimal inhibitory concentration were 0.002, 0.005, 0.011, 0.09, and 0.046 mg/mL Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Escheriehia coli, and Candida albicans, respectively. Additionally, it contains a high a-glucosidase inhibitory activity with an

IC(50) of 8 mg/mL.”
“Purpose: Genetic variability of hepatitis C virus (HCV) is considered to be an important factor defining viral pathogenesis, persistence and resistance to treatment. The aim of the present study was to characterize HCV genetic heterogeneity within a hypervariable region 1 (HVR-1) before and during the early period of pegylated interferon alfa (PEG-IFN-alpha) and ribavirin treatment in correlation with treatment outcome.

Material and Methods: The study involved 24 patients treated with PEG-IFN-alpha and ribavirin whose sera were collected before (baseline) and at 7, 14, 21 28 and 56 day of treatment. HCV HVR-1 region was amplified by nested RT-PCR and subjected to SSCP (single strand conformational polymorphism) analysis.
